Never Underestimate The Power Of...

My last client of the day yesterday was a doozy. 14 year old girl. Oldest of four girls. She was participating in some very serious risky behavior and mom brought her in for some support. There are many factors that created the situation and finding a place to start is rather difficult at times. She says she isn't going to talk, but she talks to me, a little, but still very resistant.

We closed and I was walking out behind them. This girl, knowing I was leaving, turned off the light in my office for me. I thanked her and followed her out the door. She then subsequently turned off every light on the way out of the upstairs and offered to turn off others downstairs. While this may seem like a very small thing...she was willing to help just because I thanked her.

It is amazing how powerful a thank you can be to anyone, but especially to those people who we expect should be doing those things anyway.
